Different Types of Water Meters And What They Are For

A water meter is used to measure things like water usage, volume, flow and other characteristics such as cleanliness and pH balance. The type and make usually depends on budget and where you want to install it – whether it be a house, a company building or a water treatment plant. Here are some of the different types of meters and their applications:

Positive displacement meter
This mechanical meter is the most common. You can usually find them in homes or small commercial buildings. It measures volume by monitoring how much the measuring device inside is “displaced,” or moved, by the incoming water. Because of its moving parts, it needs constant monitoring and maintenance.

Velocity flow meter
Velocity flow meters interpret the velocity, or speed, of the water as flow which can be more easily measured. There are several different subtypes of this meter: single jet, which is a more budget friendly option and good for residential; multi jet, which are ideal for industrial settings; turbine meters, which are mostly used for high volume and larger pipes in industrial or commercial settings; and lastly, compound meters, which combine the uses of a turbine meter and a displacement meter.

Electromagnetic meter
As the name suggests, the electromagnetic meter (or mag meter) uses a magnetic field to route the water in the pipes. Using a sensor and transmitter, it then measures the voltage caused by the water flowing through the magnetic field and is able to create an accurate reading. With no moving mechanical parts, it’s also known for needing little maintenance, which saves time and money. These are typically used for wastewater management.

Ultrasonic meter
Using ultrasound technology, this type of meter is able to produce readings in real time from sensors outside the pipe. Like the mag meter, it’s known for its accuracy and low maintenance, making it a very cost-effective choice in the long run. There are currently two subtypes of this meter: the doppler, usually used in the mining industry, wastewater management, or any application that deals with unclean water; and the transit water meter, which is more expensive but can be placed just about anywhere, making it ideal for tight or oddly shaped spaces.
